Aion beta weekend...
What a weekend! The beta was great. You can tell they polished the game during its Korean release. Flawless mechanics. I could run it looking gorgeous on my laptop at medium settings. It was limited to level 20, but they plan a lot of betas before the release. At level 10 I got to experience the flight mechanics. They kept it simple, and you get over a minute of flight time at level 10.
As far as quests go, you gain more xp, and level faster, from the missions/side quests than you get from killing off X and Y. The crafting system is varied, yet kept simple enough for all to learn. You can also earn well, as rewards from enemies/quests are ample.
As I said before, even in the Sanctum, a main hub, the game ran smooth. The CryEngine really shines in this game. The art reminds me of Guild Wars in the amount of time they took paying attention to the details.
All in all, a great weekend and taste of what's to come. This is a good example of designers taking their time to do things right. Looking forward to the next beta in two weeks(June 18-21).

I got to level 12 as a Ranger and I've found out how BAD that class is. Pitiful damage that makes fight a living hell and thanks to that, leveling is boring as hell.
I'm rolling an Asmodean Warrior next beta, and when it's Elyos turn again, I'll try to get my Mage to level 10 and turn Spiritmaster. I already have one on Chinese servers, but on a server that doesn't have many EU/US people and is laggy as hell.
Too bad so many rushed and on the last day of the weekend beta there were barely any people in the second main town.

Hmm if I wasn't gooing on my holls this week I would sooo be digging into Aion right now. I miss my sorc, sorcs are just plain fun - also its nice to find a spellcaster whose has a vital role other than "DPS".
Sadly my computer cries when I go to sanctum, even at min setting. Really gotta replace this junk.

Flying is fun isn't it
I thought it was a bit shocking how limited you actually are when it comes to dlying though. The fact for a while after you learn to fly you can only fly around one area.
Still gliding is easily more useful ^^

Ah, I wish I could have been around to try it. Everything I've seen about the game looks amazing. Still unsure about buying it though....

From what I heard on flying limits, it's supposed to be a tactical thing. Also, I would expect that flying would take a lot of strength and energy, so it would be tough to maintain that. There was a potion that added 10(?)% to your flight time.
As far as area limits, I guess they don't want you to just be able to fly out of danger every time you get in a bind.

Here's what I posted on a non-GW site about Aion:
Quote:
I enjoyed the beta test weekend, though I would have liked to play a little more since I was busy with RL priorities. I didn't find many bugs, but one thing that caught my eye was the clipping I experienced with the Legion cape and weapon on my back.
As for graphics, I wasn't as impressed as others might be since I come from Guild Wars, which also has a great deal of graphic detail. I could go on and on about the graphics in Guild Wars, but Aion's graphics are up to par.
Quests... were repetitive. I mean, it was just kill ______ and collect ______. Some were creative, but it was such a chore since they were the most effective way to level. But then again, leveling isn't priority in GW, so I'm going to have to adjust.
Wings were a nice concept. It brings another level to PvP since I've seen some videos of assassins dropping in from above and ambushing a defenseless target farming creatures. It also makes battles difficult for melee types. It's also fun to glide around town.
One of the aspects of the game that I found interesting was the interaction between your toon and the NPC while you spoke to them. If you hadn't noticed, your character and the NPC seem to be conversing and sometimes you get hand movements. This attention to detail should be commended as should our toons' interaction with the environment (ie. rain with the leaf as an umbrella).
As for crafting, I got heavily into armorsmithing and reached 85/99 of the first level. I liked having the work orders to complete, but disliked having to purchase the materials for the work order. They gave you one of the materials and you had to purchase the other two. Then, as the reward, you received a random material, which included crafted materials, and armor/weapon designs. I would have liked to be able to chose my reward since some of them were a bit useless. I didn't like how I received a weapon design after completing an armor design work order, but I guess in retail I would go into both armor and weapon crafting.
In terms of classes, I consistently played the Gladiator until level 16 while also getting a SM, and Assassin to level 10. I enjoyed the Gladiator class for awhile, dealing large amounts of damage and knockdown crits, but I thought it became a bit stale. Perhaps I should have mixed it up with a greatsword since I stuck with my polearm. I've been reading that gladiators should go dual wield for PvE since it yields the greatest DPS, but it's only an option available at level 25. I didn't try my hand at PvP since I'm honestly not used to this type of PvP.. since I'm from GW, which has instanced organized PvP.
I haven't decided if I'm going to stick with the gladiator... I'm considering playing only the assassin or the SM the next beta test weekend to get a feel of those classes.
